Overview of Project

I will be teaching Assignment 3 which is a Sense of Place. Sense of Place, is a fundamental element to photography. Itís a way to express what the artist may see and how to interpret this to the viewer. Even in the beginning of photography, photographers went around the world to document what a place was, itís the closest you can get to reality. They need to develop film, contact sheet, and 3 prints dry mounted, the prints are expected to be printed with good quality.

Essential Question(s)

Wanting to enhance their understanding of photography, in this class they are learning the basic elements to this. Iíve done a sense of place photography projects in the past, so I am excited to do this. Learning good quality printing for black and white photography. Learn about the sense of a place through a photograph, whether that is the space or people. Choosing 3 photos to bring about the place in a dramatic, unique way for the viewer and photographer. On the assignment sheet also- Unique lighting, camera angles, symbolism, composition Students will: Explore their sense of place in the world through three black and white photographs from both the artists and the viewers vantage point Students will present their photographs in a professional way Students will demonstrate and understanding of quality b/w photography through selection, printing and presentation Students will use lighting, camera angles, symbolism and composition to create quality photographs focusing on ěSense of Placeî

Timeline

I have about 50 min to teach this, Iíve talked with Nancy and what she wants me to address in my teaching. Introduce, PowerPoint, group activity

PowerPoint will have artist, like Ansel Adams to Alec Soth Books from the library. Joel Meyerowitz-Sense of place And my very own work, I will bring in.

Assessment

I will go through questions with them, doing the Thinking strategies throughout the PowerPoint and examples.

Teacher Vocabulary

Contrast filters used in the darkroom for creating good quality printing to showing the students current artists working in the same style for creating a sense of place.

Running out of time, Iíve found out it goes by so quickly! This was one of the teachers assignments, I feel like I have a good understanding of this topic After teaching a few weeks after I will be ahead of the critic for this project as well Will the work be displayed? What problems are anticipated with this lesson? How does this project fit into overall curriculum planning for these subject areas? How will your studentís work be shared with the community? How will you receive feedback on your teaching methodology and quality of student work?

Creating a sense of the specific place that is being photographed

Skills Development

Assignment #3: Sense of Place Develop film. Make a contact sheet Select and print three shots 5" X 7" that best describe the location when placed together. Concentrate on proper printing techniques (correct exposure, contrast filters, dodging, burning). Dry mount the three photographs on 11" X 14" museum boards.

Key Knowledge and Applications

Shoot one roll of 24 exposure Tri-X 35 mm film of a selected location. The documentation of the selected space or environment should include a variety of views to visually describe aspects of the space: the mood, social importance, time, historical context, physical space, or human relationship.

Camera, film, photo paper, matte board

Focusing Attention

Select techniques to make the combination of shots interesting and varied: Possibilities include: - Unique lighting - Unique camera angles - Abstracted images - Symbolism - Interesting composition

Learning Activities

50 min to teach Introduce project- 5 minutes PowerPoint- 25 minutes Using an example- how would you photograph the sense of place/ your location, for practice looking at contact sheets. - 20 minutes Example and teaching good quality printing in the darkroom with examples Will be showing them contact sheets, so they can see printing quality and find sequences between the photographs.
