What core curricular subject is this project exploring (in science, math, social studies etc)? What MN Curricular Standard(s)?
Pronouncing and reading sight words and understanding baby animal names. Showing they're understanding by drawing the animals and writing a sentence with the animals doing something (ex. Jumping or running).
Overview of Project
I will first have all of the three sheets of paper passed out to the students when walk in the room. The sheets of paper have the holes already punched into them ready for them to be tied together at the end of the lesson. And the strings to tie them with will already be cut. Then to start out I will have us do an example together first asking them to say my three words out loud and then going one at a time asking them what I should draw for each word. This can show the students that the drawings can be as abstract as they want.
Then I will have the words upside down and let them choose one of each color. After they have chosen one of each I will let them look over their words for a minute and then go around one at a time to have them read their words out loud to the class. When they are having difficulty I will talk them through it and have them sound out the words and get help from classmates.
I will ask them if they know what their word is and have them tell me what the mother animal is to make sure they know. Then I will have them feel their nice paper and show them the difference between a crayon and the oil pastels. Then I will let them choose two colors of oil pastels and explain that they can trade one in at any time if they would like to use another color.
Once they are done drawing, which will happen at different times. I will have the students write out a simple sentence with their three words (ex: The dog jumps away.). Then we will have strings that are long enough to tie together the pieces of paper with the words and the drawings. After everyone is finished we will go around and show each drawing and have them tell the class their sentence they came up with.
Essential Question(s)
The big idea is knowing what the words are and how to pronounce them. The students will question what baby animals name go to the larger mother animals such as a piglet belongs to a pig.
Prior Knowledge
What prior experience or knowledge do the students need before they begin this work?
The students need to be a little bit familiar with the animal's names. Also the students have to have been working on sounding out sight words and how to go about reading a word that is unfamiliar to them.
Timeline
Includes instructor-planning meetings with CVA instructor and/or teacher collaborator along with teaching dates and installation date of student's artwork if applicable.
Also if the teacher wants to have the students create some sort of acting out of their sentences another day that can be done.
Examples of Student or Artist Work
The intructor will do an example with the students before they start their own projects.
Assessment
By showing/sharing with the class the final product, along with being able to pronounce and make a sentence with their words.
Materials
Colored paper:3 sheets- 1 color of each Mi Tienes 19x25 $2.79- Michael's craft store
Oil pastels
1 hole punch
64 cut pieces of string that are 2" long
Teacher Reflection
The lesson went really well with having the student's each reading thier words out loud individually and then asking if they knew their words they sort of acted them out. I could have let them look over their words for a minute or two before they read them. Also I could have cut the strings a bit longer so that it makes it easier to tie the paper together.
Visual Elements
The drawings the students do on paper.
Skills Development
Learn skills to sound out difficult words.
Key Knowledge and Applications
Using vocabulary words with images.
Focusing Attention
Focus attention on reading the vocabulary words and knowing what they mean. The big idea is knowing what the words are and how to pronounce them. The students will question what baby animals name go to the larger mother animals such as a piglet belongs to a pig.
