Name of Project: Grid and Collage Lesson
Classroom, School: Perpich Center Arts High School
Cooperating teacher: Nancy Norwood
Grade Level: 11-12th grade

Subject: Photography

Overview of Project

Students use a 24-exposure roll of film to make one image on contact sheet. Then, they will create a collage from the same film. This lesson helps students learn to visualize photographic images differently.

Theme of Portrait Projects

Incorporating a unique location related to the person selected as subject

Essential Question

How do students to create different types of images from the same photograph?

Subsidiary Questions

What images appeal to this age student? How many images do students need to tell a story or create a different composite image?

Prior Knowledge

Basic black and white photography skill. Understanding of aperture, shutter speed, and focusing. Students should also know basic black and white darkroom skills, such as printing, filters and focusing.

Examples Artist Works

Have students look up the work of photographers and artists, such as Chuck Close, David Hawking, Danny Lyon, Lucas Samaras, Jan Dibbers, The Starn Twins, John Wood, Reed Estabrook, Sean Kernan.

Materials

Cameras, one 24-exposure roll of black and white film, 4 sheet of 8 x 10 black and white photo paper, studio tack, and matte boards.

Procedures - Step by Step

  • Explain the lesson with power point presentation, which shows examples from photographers and artists.
  • Talk about the theme of the project.
  • Each student decides the location and partner for shooting pictures along with the theme of the project.
  • Go to the location and shoot film, when students shoot pictures, they must think about the composition on the contact sheet print. (*contact sheet will be four rows of 5 photos in each, total of 20 photos.)
  • Develop the film.
  • Cut the negative into five rows.
  • Put the negative in negative sleeve.
  • Print contact sheet on 8 x 10 in photo paper, which is first part of their work.
  • Process critique with contact sheet prints, and talk about students theme.
  • Make sure the students understand second part of the lesson once more.
  • The students choose six to eight photos from the contact sheet print for collage.
  • Prints six to eight photos for collage. The students have choices of photo prints size.
  • Collage on matte board with using studio tack.
  • Put the collage in frame (optional). In the frame grass will press the collage and press hem well.
  • Display framed photo collage at a gallery space within the school and/or community.
  • Final critique.

Teacher Reflection

I do anticipate some potential problems mostly with the possibility of 24 students being so close there being same images and stories, lack of focus and progress being slow. I will try to repeat directions several times in different ways. With in the lesson we will discuss stars, placement, image making, drawing, idea creation, numbers, reading, writing, process and story creation.  This will work with what they have been doing because they have just finished making stories and are currently working with the book of the month about the night sky.  The community will be able to view the work of the children because it will be visible on the door during school hours when the door is opened. Everyone who looks at the door will see the art-work and will be able to read the stories that work with the images that the 5th and 6th graders put together.  I will get feed back from a critique from seeing the final out come of students projects,

CVA 'Teaching Artist' students in cooperation with St. Paul and Minneapolis Public Schools and Minnesota State Arts Board Roster Artists.

The following photos were taken of artworks produced by students in Nancy Norwood's Senior and Junior high school Class at Perpich Center for Arts Education during CVA student Aki Shibata's Teaching Artist Practicum lesson on Intro to black and white photography.
During their Spring Practicum, each CVA 'Teaching Artist' student is involved in 3 classroom
observations, interactions, and arts infused teaching experiences.
