Tessellations

Name of Project: Tessellations
Classroom, School: Clara Barton Open Middle School
Cooperating teacher: Allison Rubin
Grade Level: Eighth Grade
Presenter's Name: Jenna Schuldt
Subject and Curricular Link: Math infused with art, using tessellations and studying MC Escher artwork.

Overview of Project

With the provided materials the students will make tessellations from 3x3 squares. We will look closely at MC Escher's artwork as an example. It will be a two day long project. The first day will be devoted to introducing the project, demo, MC Escher, and cutting out the tessellation. On the second day the students will take a piece of 8x10 water color paper, trace their shape and continue to color it in. The requirements it that their shape has to have eyes, this could be an animal, person, or abstract. On the last day I would like to set aside a few minutes for all the students to look at each others work and have a small discussion about the project and the out come of their work.

Essential Question(s)

What is art? Is it limited to painting and drawing? How can I use art to problem solve?

Timeline

Day One: Tuesday 4/8/08 7:30am-9 Introduction of project, show examples, give demo, hand out supplies work time. Day Two: Wednesday 4/9/08 Work time, finish tessellation, look at student work, and final assessment.

Assessment

The students will demonstrate the understanding of this project with an informal assessment, which I will lead. I have two questions: What was the most difficult part of this project? And What was the most helpful thing I did? This not only helps the students to think critically, but I also get important feedback.
