Overview of Project

I will be teaching the students how to add value and shadow to a face by using different shading techniques. The shading techniques that I will be addressed are; contour line, hatching, using the side of graphite/ charcoal. I will also teach them how to quickly lay in lights and darks.

Essential Question(s)

How does value affect the perception of light, space and form? How does value affect mood or intention in a drawing?

Prior Knowledge

The students should have the basic knowledge of value and shading. They should have an understanding of the proportions of a face and have a light contour drawing of a face.

Procedures

1) Give a quick introduction to shading
2) Pass out materials if they do not already have them. Can you have materials set up at the tables to save time?
3) Show examples of student work
4) Give a demo
- Laying in light and dark values
- Using contour lines
- Hatching
- Side of Charcoal
- Refining certain areas like the mouth
5) Give them a chance to ask questions and a few minutes to play with the charcoal on another sheet of paper.
6) Get started and I will walk around the room helping
7) Quick assessment if there is time

Teacher Reflection

The students gave constructive feedback throughout the class and had really intelegent questions.

Feedback Activities

I got feedback from the assesment question I handed out about what they learned about shading faces. One thing that caught my attention was that students were not a scared to use dark values.
