During fall and spring semester, College of Visual Arts students participating in the Teaching Artist Practicum are involved in actual classroom observation, interaction, and visual arts teaching experiences. Collaborating with classroom teachers, art instructors, arts professionals, and teaching artists students students experience three classroom visual art residencies mentored by the CVA professor. Students meet independently with their collaborative partners and CVA faculty throughout the Practicum experiences to aid development of individual lesson plans and assessment methods, reflect on learning and address imminent issues. Kant Conway is a junior photography major at College of Visual Arts. Originally a fine arts major, she still finds a passion for drawing, painting and printmaking. Her art is mostly derived from childhood and the happiness that comes from it. She believes that the happiness from childhood is an important thing to hold onto later in life. She became interested in art and teaching when she met her high school art teacher, Pat Benin casa. She was amazed by the way her teacher lit a passion to learn in the students. Pat Benin casa made it fun to learn and explore new things. She treated each student as an individual. Kant wants to inspire children and young adults to explore art and their potential as creative beings.

Beck Dam ron is currently a junior studying for her BFA with a focus in painting and sculpture at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, MN. She has long held an interest in teaching at various school age levels as well as in non-traditional and therapeutic settings. As a non-traditional student herself, she brings a unique energy, perspective and level of experience to the classroom. She has been a working professional in the field of graphic design and computer illustration for over 12 years, and has been a tutor, nanny, child care worker and mentor at various points throughout her career. Having had many influential and inspirational teachers over the years, Beck entered the Teaching Artists courses at CVA so that she could continue the tradition of promoting and inspiring creative exploration at all age levels.

Caitlin Elise is a junior at the College of Visual Arts in Saint Paul and is working towards a BFA in photography. She has been volunteering in her church nursery and preschool classes since 2004, supervising infants, toddlers, and four- and five-year-olds. During the summers of 2008 and 2009 she was employed at Trinity Christian Day Camp in Anoka, working with children aged four through twelve years old. She hopes to continue her education and obtain a teaching license after graduating from CVA so that she may teach kindergarten or elementary level art. She loves taking family portraits and letting kids play with her camera, and she enjoys sharing any and all knowledge about photography that she obtains through classes with anyone interested in learning.

Travis Flak is currently finishing his last year towards his BFA in Fine Arts/Painting at the College of Visual Arts. Aside from his studies, Travis holds many positions including positions in the CVA Peer Mentorship Program, CVA Studio Technician , and an internship with painter Jill Evan. Travis has previous experience as at teaching assistant for Ted Wy man’s 6th grade art class at Valley Middle School. Once Travis is finished his CVA degree, he will be pursuing an MFA and intends to teach at the college level.

Stephanie Frey is a senior at the College of Visual Arts and is pursuing a degree in Illustration. She has worked for Wes tonka School Age Kids Core in Mound, Mn and also at the Hal lie Q. Brown center in St. Paul, Mn. This past summer she completed an internship as a teaching assistant at the Minestrone Center for the Arts in Way, Mn. She has lead and planned many of the art activities where the children were challenged and had fun while doing it. She’s excited to watch children being excited about learning through the arts. She loves to watch students creatively problem solve, explore art forms, and find their voice of expressing themselves. Stephanie wants to become a teaching artist to share her passion for the illustration arts.

Melissa Arousing is a Junior at the College of Visual Arts, majoring in Illustration. Though she is varied in the applications of her studies, her true passion is in writing and illustrating children’s books. She wants to show people at a young age they can aspire to do great things and to never give up on their dreams, but just develop them. Melissa hopes to utilize the lessons learned in this program to work directly with children and also to further her understanding of what they need to hear from a good book.

Katie Mc Murray is currently a senior at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul where she is pursing her BFA in Illustration. She has a passion for creating art with a lot of love, a splash of charm, and a dash of whimsy. Katie developed this passion with the help of some amazingly inspiring teachers. She hopes to one day be happily settled down and creating art for children in whatever form it may take as well as returning the favor and
inspiring children as she was inspired by her teachers growing up.
Katie recently spent the past summer as an education intern at Agriculture in Minneapolis. There she helped the teachers prepare for class each morning, assisted children in projects, and learned a lot about different teaching methods. It was at this internship that she first experienced this newfound love of teaching and, most exciting of all, helping to guide children to discover their own creative potential.

Katy Forth is working towards her BFA with a concentration on painting at the College of Visual Arts. Creative activities have been a strong foundation in her life since childhood. She knows that growing up with the great art education is one of the key steps to becoming a creative individual. Amber Walling is a senior at the College of Visual Arts pursuing a Bachelors Fine Arts degree with a painting and drawing focus. She can remember how she has loved being creative and expressive through the arts and understands the impact of teachers and art can have on learning and development. She would like to continue to learn about becoming a teaching artist through the CVA's Teaching Artist courses so she can someday share what she knows about art and inspire others to learn and grow through the arts.

Kate lyn White, a photography major at the College of Visual Arts, has had an interest in arts education since arriving at CVA. Kate lyn hopes to one day share her passion for the arts through photography in a classroom setting. Working in the community with Parks and Recreation and Star Players Theater Camp, Kate lyn has been able to experience the joy of teaching first hand. In the future, she hopes to become an established professional photojournalist and travel the world in hopes of addressing social reform through her photographs. She also plans to be working with art students through alternative, traditional, and modern styles of photography to help students learn to be innovative and creative.

Meagan Wood is a sophomore at the College of Visual Arts. Her chosen field of study is Illustration where she hopes to gain a better grasp on different techniques and new ideas. She does freelance artwork and commissions during her free time. Alongside of this, she fixes/builds computers and builds websites, offering insight and advice for both. Her artwork has been displayed in local art shows around the St. Cloud area and she has painted several illustrative murals at a local high school from the same area. Her goal is to become a matte painter in an animation studio where she can put her skills of drawing and painting to good use. She also wishes to eventually start a program to give children/teenagers an opportunity to explore their inner creativity by exposing them to different methods of creating artwork.
