Remote Access to ARTstor

ARTstor authenticates users by their IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, which are the numbers that identify every computer on the Internet. Every institution has one or a set of IP addresses that identify the computers physically networked on its campus. ARTstor relies on those IP addresses to determine whether or not a user is authorized to access the ARTstor Digital Library. When a user attempts to access ARTstor from off-campus, the IP address will not be recognized.

Remote access for CVA users is by Remote Access Grace Period. Users may access ARTstor remotely by first creating a registered user account when accessing ARTstor from any computer on the CVA campus that has a CVA IP address.

Each registered user account comes with a 120-day "grace period" during which it may be used to access ARTstor from any computer, regardless of IP address; if a user tries to access ARTstor from off-campus, a small window requesting log-in information will appear. As long as there is time remaining in the Remote Access Grace Period, the user will be able to log in and enter ARTstor with his or her registered user account. Each time a user logs in to his or her account from an authenticated IP address (i.e., from within the institution's network), the 120-day grace period is reset.

For more information on remote acces, please see ARTstor Online Help.

Remote Access and the Offline Image Viewer (OIV)

ARTstor requires that every installation of the OIV be authenticated the first time the program is launched, as well as every 30 days thereafter. If 30 days elapse without re-authentication, the OIV will still be usable but access to ARTstor images will be blocked until authentication is reestablished.

*On-campus use: Versions 2.5 and later of the OIV feature automatic IP authentication, meaning those computers connected to the Internet from a valid IP address do not have to manually renew the ARTstor certificate every 30 days.

* Off-campus use: Off-campus use of the OIV requires manual authentication. When prompted, simply enter the log-in information for a registered user's ARTstor account. Please note that there must be time remaining in the 120 day Remote Access Grace Period.

For more information about the OIV, please see ARTstor Online Help.
